50th Superbowl

The Super Bowl is arguably the biggest yearly international sporting event in any calendar year, with hundreds of millions of people worldwide tuning in to watch the NFLs top sides clashing together in the football match to end all matches. Coupled with the glitz and celebrity of the half-time show, and the countless millions of dollars spent by advertisers and commercial partners in making the event a success, it’s hard to avoid the Super Bowl, wherever in the world you live.

This year’s Super Bowl is scheduled to take place on 7th February 2016, and marks the 50th occasion of the event. Traditionally marked with Roman numerals, this is the first Super Bowl to used conventional number – Super Bowl 50, rather than Super Bowl L. Scheduled to take place in the San Francisco Bay area, it is the first Super Bowl to take place in California since 1985. With the half-time show expected to boast slots from Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars

While the season still has some way to run, a number of early favourites have emerged, vying for places at the Super Bowl in February. Here we’ve previewed some of the leading contenders at this stage for the Super Bowl, to give you a flavour of the type of action you might expect in the weeks to come in the run up to the main event.

New England PatriotsPatriots

The New England Patriots are early favourites to make the Super Bowl. Last year’s winners still boast much of the same talent as in previous seasons, and look a force to be reckoned with in the run up to the match itself. Led by Tom Brady, the Patriots seem reenergised thanks to the return of Julian Edelman, who has been incredibly influential for the Patriots since his recovery from a broken foot. But they won’t be able to book their place at the Super Bowl without overcoming the Denver Broncos first. Brady vs. Manning is an intriguing clash of titans, both with significant experience and nouse when it comes to controlling games. No less than the seventeenth time these two have opposed each other on the field, it looks set to be another epic clash.

PanthersCarolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are widely tipped to perform well, and many expect them to go all the way to California. Coach Ron Rivera has whipped into shape a side that look ready to contend for the Super Bowl, and they feel like a football team that has plenty in both defence and offence to cause anyone problems. But they are not without their weaknesses, particularly in the secondary, and a canny opposition could still derail Carolina’s hopes of reaching Super Bowl 50.

They’ll have to overcome the Arizona Cardinals first – no mean feat, given their proficiency moving forward. Carolina have lost a few sizeable leads already this season, so while they could go all the way, it will take a concerted effort from Rivera and Co. to stop the Cardinals first.

BroncosDenver Broncos

Perhaps natural outsiders against the Patriots, Denver Broncos still have enough heart to pose a serious threat of an upset, and they have ability right across the field to win their key battles. The Broncos will be relying on Manning to turn up and control the game like they know he can, and the veteran will be instrumental in establishing the Broncos lines of attack. However, it would be a brave tipster who called it in the Broncos favour, given recent performances by the Patriots. But with Denver last crowned Champions in 1998, there is some hunger to get back in the pack.

Arizona Cardinals

Narrowly overcoming the Packers, the Cardinals have come together to look like a team that could be seriously competing come February. Performances have looked convincing, from a side that has appeared at the Super Bowl once but not yet successfully won on the day. The Cardinals could well be this season’s surprise package, and with good odds available for those backing the Cardinals now, some tipsters are suggesting this is where the smart money lies.

With the season down to the final four, the competition to lift the iconic 50th Super Bowl is seriously hotting up. While the Patriots probably remain the favourites to win again, each of the four remaining sides looks capable of mounting a challenge. It remains to be seen how they fare in the round of four on Sunday, where two will emerge victorious with a place at Super Bowl 50.
